Thinking Your Way to Wealth (7 key principles)

Thinking Your Way to Wealth (7 key principles)

Nov 30, 2024

Read time - 3 minutes / Disclaimer

Napoleon Hill wrote one of the greatest books on building a rich mindset.

Using his tactics in Think & Grow Rich to pursue big goals can lead to:

- More freedom.

- More choices.

- Less work.

Unfortunately, conforming to society is the norm.

Big Goals Scare People

If you have big aspirations —

Friends and family often say things like:

- That sounds risky.

- What if you lose money?

- What if you don't succeed?

But —

What if you do?

What if you nail your goals?

What if you hit a home run?

I didn't know any wealthy people growing up.

My family lived in a low income area.

My mom was a single parent.

So —

How do you go from $0 to a $1M+ net worth as an ordinary person?

To make six figures.

To own 10 rental properties (was my goal).

To hit the $1M+ mark by 30 (was my goal too).

Without —

Having a fancy degree.

Coming from a wealthy family.

Knowing any rich people to ask questions?

The solution I came up with was —

You read books.

You learn what works.

You copy that success.

I didn't have much money.

So I went to Barnes & Noble and read for free.

I didn't end up owning 10 rental properties.

And I didn't become a millionaire by 30.

But I did figure out how to own 7 rental properties.

How to invest in the stock market.

And became a millionaire at 36 years old.

With enough desire, I believe anyone can do it.

Think and Grow Rich was one of the first books I read to figure out how.

Here's 7 key principles inside the book (plus how to get it free):

Principle 1: Desire

“The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE. Weak desire brings weak results.”

Napoleon shares: strong desire yields strong results.

How badly you want something is directly tied to the likelihood of you getting it.

Principle 2: Belief

“You can influence, direct, and control your environment. You can make your life what you want it to be.”

Napoleon states you must believe it's possible to achieve your desires.

If you don't believe it's possible, you won't find success.

Principle 3: Goals

“Set your mind on a goal and observe how quickly the world stands aside to let you pass.”

Set crystal clear goals.

If someone wakes you from a dead sleep and shouts "what are your goals", you should be able to rattle them off quickly.

Principle 4: Thoughts

"Thoughts are things when mixed with definiteness of purpose, persistence, and a burning desire."

Napoleon believes thoughts have the power to change your life.

Guard your mind from negativity and fill it with things that move you closer to your goals.

Principle 5: Persistence

“A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits.”

Pursue your goals relentlessly.

Adopt the belief that quitting is simply not an option.

Principle 6: Fear

“If you do not conquer self, you will be conquered by self.”

Napoleon says fear will try to derail your plans.

Expect fear, face it head on, and continue moving forward.

Principle 7: Failure

“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal your plans are not sound. Rebuild your plans and set sail once more toward your goals.”

Failing along the way is part of the journey when you're pursuing big goals.

Know failure will come and refuse to accept it as defeat.

Conclusion

When you're chasing big goals, you're on a different path than most people.

This can lead to criticism.

A lot of it!

A good reminder from Napoleon:

“Everyone has a flock of opinions ready to be wished upon anyone who will accept them.”

When receiving criticism.

I've found it helpful to ask yourself:

"Does this person have the life I'm working towards"

If not, smile and nod but carry on with your plans.
